Update: 17 injured and 2 dead in Helpmekaar accident

2 vehicles, a minibus and an ambulance, were involved in the crash along Helpmekaar Road. 17 people were injured and two lost their lives.

A woman who was a passenger in the minibus taxi was declared dead at the scene. Another passenger died on the way to hospital.

It is believed that the ambulance was responding to a call-out at the time. No patients were on board. One of the medics was trapped in the vehicle and fellow colleagues had to use the jaws of life to free him.

Emergency personnel, including Sharaj Ambulance Services (who were first to arrive), treated mass casualties on scene.

The injured were stabilised and then transported to hospital for further medical attention.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage.

There is complete road closure until such time as the scene is cleared.
