The following message that is circulating on WhatsApp about tap water being contaminated with sewage is false.
IFP councillor Abbas Warasally’s name is mentioned in the message and he was approached for comment on the matter.
He said, “I have no knowledge of water being contaminated. The message on WhatsApp has my name spelled incorrectly, so it definitely wasn’t me who sent the message.”
He asks the person who is responsible for the message to remove it.
uThukela District Municipality say they have noted the circulating allegations that Ladysmith’s tap water is contaminated with sewage.
They say the allegations are unfounded.
Consumers in Ladysmith receive safe potable water supply from the Ladysmith and Ezakheni Water Works.
The water quality from both water works is monitored scientifically by taking samples and analysing them at a laboratory on a regular basis, by uThukela District Municipality and the Department of Water & Sanitation.
Water samples recently taken from both water works indicated that the water is safe for drinking.
“This means that the allegations are misinformation circulated by people who would like to confuse our consumers regarding our water quality,” says uThukela District Municipality spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza.
