‘Washed-out Wednesday’ is the latest bowls phenomenon, it seems. Sadly, it appears that this year it will rain only on Wednesdays, so once again the Spar Tops Business League was cancelled last week.
Although the weather once again played a big part in whether the Midlands Singles would be played on Saturday, it decided it would be cold with a slight drizzle, but not enough to stop play. All games were played and at the end of the day, it was known who would be contesting the semi-finals on Sunday morning.
Sadly, Midlands have so few lady members, so the Veteran Ladies were only two players. Therefore the final would be played on Sunday between two Klipbank ladies, Veronica Malan and Magriet Coetzee.
The Open Ladies had six players, so the final for the Open would also be played on Sunday, again contested by two Klipbank ladies: Ida Oosthuizen and Fran Baleri.
The only semi-finals played on Sunday morning were for the Veteran Men.
These were Pierre Swart from Harrismith and Stuart Longmore from The Nest, and Phil Rooke from Bergville and Russell Moore (also from Bergville).
The open semis were between Theunis Fraser from The Nest and Thenis van Zyl from Harrismith and Braam van Zyl from Harrismith and David Nel from Bergville.
These games were very exciting and the scores were very close.
The results were in and so we had Veronica vs Magriet, Ida vs Fran, Russell vs Stuart and Theunis vs David.
There was a good number of spectators, the sun was shining and we were in for some great bowls. The games were tight and the concentration intense, but as always, somebody has to win.
The final results are: Veteran Lady winner – Veronica Malan; Open Lady winner – Ida Oosthuizen; Veteran Men’s winner – Stuart Longmore; and Open Men’s winner – Theunis Fraser.
Congratulations to each and every one of you, and hard lines to the runners-up; you all put up a great fight.
Nothing on this weekend, so relax, but do come and play Tabs-In on Saturday.
The AGM was held last Thursday.
Congratulations to Bob Corringham on being elected president for another year and to all the committee members, new and old.
“See You On The Greens!”
