2 dead in horror crash at Tugela Plaza

Two people died after two trucks collided at the Tugela Plaza shortly before midnight.

The driver of one of the trucks, carrying rolls of paper, is believed to have lost control and rear-ended an oil truck.

Two fatalities have been reported – one of the drivers died at the scene and this morning, a passenger was found dead among the debris during clean-up operations.

The N3 (north and southbound lanes) was closed because about 27,000 litres of oil spilled onto the road, making the area incredibly dangerous. The truck carrying paper rolls went through the electric beams at the Tugela Plaza and rear-ended an oil truck that was just starting to pull away after going through the booths.

The driver of the oil truck sustained slight injuries, while the other driver and a passenger were killed instantly.

The cab was completely destroyed and the driver was dismembered.

Total road closure was in effect on the N3 for about two and a half hours while Biozorb was poured onto the oil spill. The spill at the Plaza extended across the northbound and southbound lanes.

Traffic started flowing freely again at about 1am, with three lanes being used. This was due to efficient management by N3TC and RTI, together with Spill Tech personnel, who covered all the lanes fast and effectively.

EMRS, Sharaj Ambulance Services, Bergville SAPS and towing services were also on scene.

At 2am, Spill Tech and N3TC personnel were still working hard to clear the road. The oil truck was removed quickly, but the paper-carrying truck took longer to recover because of the search for the missing passenger. The passenger was only found early this morning.

The road has been cleared and traffic is flowing normally again.
