Cops nab armed robber and attempted murder suspect

A 24-year-old wanted suspect was arrested yesterday afternoon (Janaury 9) by officers attached to the Newcastle Public Order Policing (POP) Task Team.

The arrest was as a result of intelligence gathered by officers from the Ladysmith Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG) Unit.

The suspect was being sought by Ladysmith as well as Ezakheni detectives for two cases of business robbery that occurred during December and early this month in the Ladysmith area, as well as for an attempted murder case that occurred in Ezakheni.

The Newcastle Public Order Policing Unit Task Team arrested the man in the Steadville area. He was found in possession of a .38 revolver and ammunition.

The 24-year-old will appear in court soon, facing charges of business robbery, attempted murder and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic testing.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bheki Langa commended the officers for their outstanding work in the area. “Recovered firearms will reduce the killing of innocent people. We will investigate and see if arrested suspects are not wanted for other crimes in the province,” he said.
