61-year-old hands himself over to cops

A 61-year-old man from the Isandlwana area (Upper Tugela) handed himself over to Upper Tugela police on Friday afternoon (January 6).

He was being sought for the theft of a firearm.

During the latter part of December last year, the suspect stumbled across a crime scene in the area.

Being the first to discover the scene, he decided to ‘pocket’ a firearm, which he later notified others in the community about.

Further investigations revealed that he had an ‘exhibit’ from the scene.

Upper Tugela police paid several visits to his residence, but he was never at home.

The firearm will be subject to ballistic testing.

The suspect appeared in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court on Monday (January 9), facing a charge of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. A further charge of theft may be added to the charge sheet.
