The prisoners were being transported by SAPS officers and were all awaiting trial prisoners held at Ladysmith Correctional Services.

They had been picked up and were being transported in a police prisoner transport vehicle.

They managed to force open the door and escaped from custody as the vehicle slowed down at the Mooi River Toll Plaza.

Shots were fired.

Eight prisoners managed to escape into a nearby informal settlement and a massive police manhunt is underway.

It is believed that 16 prisoners were being transported, but only eight decided to escape.
