Bulldogs beat farmers in physical, bruising encounter

This past Friday (May 12), the Clover Leaf sponsored Bulldogs rugby team travelled to Winterton to take on their nemesis in what were very poor playing conditions.

This, however, didn’t stop either side from giving it their all in this very physical and bruising encounter.

The Bulldogs won 19-7. Beating these tough farmers in their backyard is never easy, so for us it was a great victory. We definitely missed coach Christo Kruger’s super-charging psyche-up before the game, so for the next game we will make sure he’s in our change room. Even if he gets the coach to climb the walls higher than the players.

Winterton had prepared well to stop our giant pack, doing extremely well to hold their own. It was only well into the second half when once again our superior fitness gave us the edge.

We managed to have the lion’s share of ball possession, but great defence and big hits kept us out.

Both sides only managed one try apiece – our try was scored by our captain courageous Isak Boshoff in his never-say-die attitude. The other points scorers were Duran Law (three points) and Lennert Buitendach (contributing with nine points).

‘Man of the match’ for the back-line was Ronnie Parker and for the forwards Henk Muller and Pieter Cohen.

Thank you to everyone who made the effort to come support the Bulldogs in this epic battle in shocking conditions.

We really appreciate the support. I can honestly tell you that it helps when you have your supporters cheering you on.

Once again, a very big thank you to our sponsors – Gerald, Phillip and Angela Boardman – who once again transported half the team to Winterton.

Thank you to Maxine and Deidre Meiring, team manager Deon van Wyk and coach Flippie Fourie – you guys are amazing! Your help and input into this all-conquering team does not go unnoticed.

On Friday (May 19), the Bulldogs host VOB at Settlers Park. Kick-off will be at 8pm.
