Hefty prison sentence for double murder in Ladysmith

Zamani Sizwe Buthelezi (30) will spend a very long time behind bars after being convicted of shooting and killing two people.

On the evening of Sunday, May 31, 2015, Phillip Mbongi Khumalo, aged 59, and Sakhile Raymond Ndlovu, aged 21, were shot and killed at an intersection on the Newcastle road outside Ladysmith. The two were travelling in a delivery vehicle which was destined for an out-of-town delivery. At the intersection, the two were attacked by gunmen and killed.

After receiving a report of the shooting, police officers rushed to the scene and found the two deceased. The scene was cordoned off and an investigation began.

Police discovered that the vehicle’s load was still intact and that none of the deceased’s property was taken.

A case docket of murder was registered and allocated to Constable BX Zwane of the Ladysmith Detective Service.

The very next afternoon, 30-year-old Zamani Sizwe Buthelezi was arrested by the investigating officer and found to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Investigations revealed that the accused had decided to kill Phillip Khumalo, his colleague, on the day in question. He cited a grudge as the reason for the attack.

While in a tavern, he discussed the plot in the company of another man. The same evening, Buthelezi was accompanied by a co-accused to the crime scene, where he shot and killed both the deceased.

He was convicted and sentenced on May 9 in the Ladysmith Regional Court to 15 years’ imprisonment for one charge of murder, 15 years for a second charge of murder, 10 years for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and five years for being in possession of unlicensed ammunition.

His co-accused was acquitted of all charges levelled against him.
