Update: Cow rescued from river in Protea Drive

Officer Madonsela from Public Safety helps with the rescue of the cow

The cow that was trapped earlier today (October 10) in the river in Protea Drive has been rescued.

The hapless animal was spotted by residents and farmers from the area.

Public Safety officers and a large group of community members responded to the scene to try and get the cow out of the water.

A tow rope was used by the community members as they inched the bovine beast out of the muddy river.

It took around 40 minutes for the animal to be rescued from the river.

Once the cow was out of the river, it appeared to be drained of all energy and could barely stand on its own legs.

It was a great community effort, with the help of Public Safety officers.

The Ladysmith Fire Department also responded to the scene.
