Huge Spitting Cobra found at Ladysmith home

Local snake expert Fanie Cilliers says the past weekend was really busy, with snake call after snake call coming in.

There were 10 calls last Saturday alone.

The rise in the number of snakes that are active during this time of year is due to the weather, he says.

Late last Saturday evening, Fanie was contacted by a Ladysmith Gazette journalist about a snake at a home in Kandahar Avenue… And a big one at that!

He quickly got back into his working gear and was off on yet another call.

On arrival, Fanie spoke to the homeowners and told them to please put their dog away to avoid an unpleasant incident between the dog and the snake.

After that, it was plain sailing for Fanie, who quickly had the snake under his control and safely away from people.

The snake was identified as a cobra.

Fanie added that the day was so busy that he even ran out of containers and bags to put all the snakes in.

People are urged to stay away from snakes and not harm them in any way. Most snake bites happen when a person tries to handle a snake or tries to harm it in some way.

A snake expert should be contacted as soon as a snake is seen.
