Breaking News: MEC backs down and allows taxis to start operating in Ladysmith

MEC for Transport, Community Safety & Liaison Mr Mxolisi Kaunda reinstated taxi operations in Ladysmith this afternoon (January 8).

As of tomorrow, all taxis will be allowed to run with some restrictions. The MEC will continue to monitor the situation closely.

The local banning of taxi operations was intended to bring stability to the taxi industry in Ladysmith and areas within Alfred Duma Local Municipality, where approximately 71 lives have been lost since the outbreak of the conflict between Sizwe Transport Taxi Association and Klipriver Taxi Association

Angry protesters blocked off many entrances to Ladysmith from Sunday night, threatening to shut down Ladysmith’s economy.

The Department of Transport, Community Safety & Liaison, together with the municipality, will be holding Cluster Public Consultation Meetings within Alfred Duma Local Municipality to report back on the decision of the MEC.

The details and venue of the meetings will be made available by the municipality.

“The community is urged to attend these meetings, as they are important,” said Speaker Cllr Themba Ngubane from the Department of Transport.
