Update: Taxis in full swing again in Ladysmith, roads cleared (Video Included)

The Sizwe Transport Taxi Association and Klipriver Taxi Association are back in operation from today (January 9).

MEC for Transport, Community Safety & Liaison Mr Mxolisi Kaunda reinstated taxi operations in Ladysmith yesterday afternoon.

As of today, all taxis will be allowed to run, with some restrictions.

The MEC will continue to monitor the situation closely.

The local banning of taxi operations was intended to bring stability to the taxi industry in Ladysmith and areas within Alfred Duma Local Municipality, where approximately 71 lives have been lost since the outbreak of the conflict between these two taxi associations.

Angry protesters blocked off many entrances to Ladysmith on Sunday night, threatening to shut down Ladysmith’s economy. Buses were burned in Driefontein and Peacetown, and vehicles were also set on fire in other areas.

After the reinstatement of taxi operations, TLBs were used until late last night to clear the roads that were blocked by rocks and tree branches.

“We are so glad that this taxi situation is over, as we now have transport to go to hospital and work without any difficulty,” said one grateful resident.
