Update: Electricians begin work at water plant, water should be back tonight

An electrician at the water plant, attending to the problems

Electricians have begun working at the Ezakheni water treatment plant to fix the problems and restore water supply to the affected residents.

The work has started on the electrical components, and uThukela say they will try to have water flowing out of residents’ taps by 8pm tonight if all the work goes according to plan.

uThukela explain that the water interruptions experienced by Ladysmith residents over the festive season was due to the following problems…

The main reason was the storms and heavy rain, bringing large amounts of silt into the Tugela River.

They add that the plant is a water treatment plant and not a silt treatment plant. The high silt levels in the water damage the pumps and affect the treatment process, as the filters and even the clarifiers are filled up with sand.

This slows down the treatment process drastically, which causes the output of water in the system to be less, which in turn causes the interruptions.

The storms also damaged the electrical components, which impacts on the operation of the water plant. These electrical components are currently being attended to by uThukela.
